Be a Reading Booster!

Have a passion for promoting the importance of reading?
Want to support the improvement of reading skills for the adults in your community?


Key Responsibilities:
¨ Your organization and communication skills are needed to help speak out for literacy.
¨ Option to hold key leadership positions on the Council, such as an officers or a committee chair
¨ Multiple opportunities to contribute your skills, time, and expertise

Initial Impact:
¨ Participation enables the Council to provide vital support to Placer County communities through the Placer Adult Literacy Service (PALS): reaching out to local citizens who need free reading assistance

Sustained Outcomes:
¨ Contributing to the strength and continual growth of the Literacy Support Council of Placer County, established in 1991
¨ Enhancing the success of the Placer Adult Literacy Service in building the reading skills of the one in five adults in Placer County who could benefit from reading help

Training:
¨ Information, materials, and assistance from other Council members are provided

Support:
¨ Members receive the full support of the PALS Coordinator (a member of the Council), other Council members, and the Placer County Library.

Commitment:
¨ Six months to one year preferred

Time:
¨ Attendance at monthly Council meetings
¨ Optional additional attendance at team meetings or work on special projects

Qualifications:
¨ Enthusiasm for reaching adults who need reading assistance
¨ Friendly, pleasant, dependable, and able to work in group situations
¨ Desire to support the development of reading skills of adults in your local Placer County community
¨ Contacts with other community organizations and agencies helpful

Desirable Skills:
¨ Diverse talents and abilities are welcome
¨ Ability to share information with others
¨ Bookkeeping, accounting, and other administrative skills
¨ Marketing, public relations, editorial or grant writing experience
¨ Leadership experience/aptitude

Benefits:

Summer Reading Coach Training Slated for July 2010

Make a difference in someone's life...be an adult literacy volunteer reading coach!! No special skills are required...just patience, compassion, and a genuine desire to help an adult improve his or her skills!

An Information Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 22nd at 6:00pm at the Loomis Library. Please make it a priority to attend this meeting as information will be discussed that won't be covered during the training.

The two-day summer training will be conducted at the Loomis Library on Friday, July 30th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm and Saturday, July 31st from 9:ooam - 5:00 pm. Participants must attend BOTH days of the training in order to become a reading coach.

Pre-registration is required to ensure that adequate materials are supplied. Deadline to register is noon on Tuesday, July 20th.

Light refeshments will be served on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Particpants must being their lunch as time will not allow to go off-site.

Upcoming Spring Tutor Training!

Make a difference in someone's life...be an adult literacy volunteer! Won't you consider sharing the gift of reading? Help the people in your community who wish to improve their reading and/or writing skills!

There will be an informational meeting held on Monday, March 15th at the Rocklin Library at 6:00 pm. Please make it a priority to attend this meeting if you wish to tutor!

The spring two-day Tutor Training for the Placer Adult Literacy Service will be conducted at the Rocklin Library in Rocklin!

Interested participants must plan to attend the informational meeting and both days of the training. Pre-registration is required by March 22nd so that adequate materials and supplies can be provided.
